The 129+ year-old parent body has been committed to “Empowerment of Women Through Education”. The Institution has a century long history of dedicated work towards making women educated and self-reliant. MKSSS, Pune was established in 1896 by the great visionary and social worker Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve to provide shelter to destitute women.
 
About MKSSS
 
Originally named Hingne Stree Shikshan Samstha, it began as a “Home for Widows” and a school for widows, reflecting Karve’s deep commitment to women's empowerment through education.
The institution was later renamed Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha to honor his legacy.
MKSSS has grown into a vast educational network offering programs from pre-primary to professional education, serving over 32,000 students annually.

Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve
 
Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve was a visionary social reformer whose relentless efforts laid the foundation for women's education and empowerment in India. Born on 18 April 1858 in Sheravali village in Maharashtra, Karve grew up witnessing the harsh realities of widowhood and gender inequality. These early experiences shaped his lifelong mission to uplift women through education and social reform.
Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve’s life was a beacon of progressive thought and fearless action. His legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding us that education and compassion can reshape society. Through his institutions and ideals, Karve empowered countless women to rise above societal constraints and lead dignified lives.
 
Maharshi Karve’s Vision
 
He believed that “Women’s Education & National Development are complementary to each other”.
His mission was to uplift, to free someone bondage, to educate poor and needy and, downtrodden women, making them self-reliant and confident members of society.
MKSSS continues to thrive as a beacon of women's education in India, carrying forward Karve’s century-old legacy.
